The Gap:Escape from Normal Life
From sunrise to sunset, the city repeats its rhythm within a continuous 24-hour cycle. Street vendors calling out, footsteps passing by, brief conversations between strangers—these fragments form the everyday life of the city. Located in the Gongguan district of Taipei, the site sits within a building long occupied by a traditional market. The first and second floors are filled with stalls, narrow aisles, and dense flows of people. Sounds, smells, and movements overlap, creating a vibrant yet overwhelming urban routine. The Gap begins by carving a narrow opening within this ordinary setting. Emerging directly from the market, a thin spatial crack invites people to step away from the noise of daily life. As one moves deeper inside, the atmosphere gradually shifts. The chaotic energy of the market fades, replaced by a growing sense of calm. White spaces unfold like a quiet flood, dissolving the presence of the outside world. Within this sequence, visitors move through a series of spaces— a staircase carved like a slit, a café, exhibition rooms, a gallery, and a reading space. Each level further distances the visitor from the density of the market below. At the end of the journey lies a room with nothing inside. No objects. No commerce. No purpose. Only silence. Within the most crowded part of the city, The Gap creates a moment of pause— a brief escape from normal life.
