The Madeira Terrace Cycling Café is an adaptive reuse proposal for the currently unused Madeira Terrace walkway, originally constructed between 1890 and 1900 by Phillip C. Lockwood. This iconic structure, stretching 2.5 kilometers along Brighton’s seafront, is believed to be the world’s longest cast-iron structure. Built to attract London tourists arriving by train, it played a significant role in the development of the Brighton Centre.
The challenge of transforming this long, narrow space into a functional café lies in balancing the design with limited depth. After several layout explorations, the optimal solution was to create a café where cyclists can ride directly inside, purchase food, and park their bikes safely without dismounting. The design includes bike racks, vending machines, and a built-in bike lane for convenience.
The Cycling Café aims to offer cyclists along Brighton Beach’s bike lanes a welcoming spot to rest, socialize, and recharge. The café’s design incorporates a bike-friendly lane, allowing cyclists to park their bikes along a railing while they enjoy their break. Additional features include a drive-thru take-out window, self-serve coffee stations, and seating for walkers. With stunning views of the beach, the café creates an inviting atmosphere where cyclists and beachgoers can relax and connect.
