Historical Preservation and Renovation - Historical Urban Districts Revitalization

Client's Name

Country / Region

United States

In the city of Hangzhou, which is a blend of tradition and modernity, the historical neighborhood of Gongshu District is like a pearl of the past, quietly telling a long cultural memory and humanistic story. However, with the rise of high-rise buildings, this area of deep historical value has been swept away by the waves of modernization and has gradually become out of place. We understand that the traditional lifestyle and community memories of this area are not only the memory of the past, but also the inspiration for the future development of the city. This project focuses on preservation and revitalization, continuing the cultural lineage of the historic district while injecting new community vitality, allowing residents to live in an environment full of fireworks and modern functionality.

Core design highlights: 1 Historical scene reproduction. Preserve and optimize the residents' habit of drying clothes, create a shared space with both shade and drying functions through mesh structures, and incorporate plants and greenery to continue the living scene of the historical community. 2 Community agriculture and market. The planning of residents' exclusive vegetable gardens and the establishment of a weekend produce market activate the community economy and social interaction, while preserving the tradition of self-growing and self-selling. 3 Cultural experience is integrated into daily life. Restore historical buildings and alleys, and incorporate small-scale exhibitions and interactive installations, so that residents and tourists can experience cultural memories and enhance their sense of belonging to the community. 4 Revitalization of public space.

Integrate spatial resources, add leisure plazas, children's activity areas and elderly-friendly facilities, and create multi-functional public spaces to meet the living needs of different groups of people. Through the integration of history and modernity, this historical residential area will be transformed from “static protection” to “dynamic revitalization”. This is a journey of revitalization centered on humanistic care, a dream of a community where history and future are intertwined.
