New Axis is about realigning media production with urban space, democratizing access to media, and redefining the role of a TV facility in a civic and cultural landscape. it envisions a new headquarters for PBS, a non-profit television provider, while transforming the traditional media facility into an interactive public space. Beyond its role as a broadcaster, PBS becomes an educator and supporter in an era where individuals increasingly use video to document and share their lives. The building provides rental access to production studios and resources, fostering a broader, more inclusive media landscape.

The architectural design introduces a 45-degree rotated grid, breaking from the surrounding urban fabric to establish a new axis that frames Los Angeles City Hall and a major intersection as dynamic backdrops for studio broadcasts. This shift also creates a city corridor, linking the intersection with Grand Park to enhance urban connectivity. At its core, New Axis makes media production more tangible and accessible to the public. It houses PBS as an institution that broadcasts, researches, and educates on civic life, particularly within the cultural context of Grand Park. By integrating media production with the city, the project fosters deeper engagement with politics, culture, and civic life, transforming the TV facility into an architectural paradigm that enhances the media experience.

A dedicated public circulation path allows visitors to tour the facility, witnessing live production, studio operations, and post-production workflows. This open-access approach demystifies the media-making process, fostering media literacy and public engagement.

Responding to the evolving role of media in a post-pandemic world, New Axis acknowledges the necessity for individuals to cultivate their own media identities while grounding media production in physical space. By balancing digital and physical engagement, the project redefines the relationship between television, the city, and the public, making media architecture a civic and cultural landmark.
