Hidden inside an aging mall in Makati, Manila, this lounge bar and club reimagines Japanese nightlife through a nostalgic yet futuristic lens. On weekdays it functions as an intimate bar; on weekends, it transforms into a high-energy club with live DJs.

From the exterior, the space appears as if still under construction—its façade wrapped in “temporary” newspaper cladding, echoing the improvised enclosures often seen around Japanese renovations. Amidst this façade, a small figure shop—an icon of Japanese subculture—serves as the secret entrance. A sensor-activated display door opens to a tunnel where digital koi swim through projection mapping, guiding guests into an immersive interior world.

The layout flows from a lively bar counter and standing tables to plush sofa lounges, terrace seating, and a secluded VIP room with its own surreal entry—a vestibule that feels like an inverted restroom, playing with perception and humor. A manga-themed corridor leads to the restrooms, reinforcing the playful spirit throughout.

The design concept draws inspiration from Japan’s 1980s bubble era—a time of excess, light, and optimism. Nostalgic materials such as zinc-galvanized steel panels, etched mirrors, and disco mirror balls meet modern technologies like RGB-controlled indirect lighting and projection mapping. The ceiling grid, designed to lift the eye within the low height constraints, comes alive as color and rhythm pulse to music. Kanji letterforms across the floor turn typography into texture, merging graphic and architectural expression.

Despite the building’s low ceiling and confined footprint, openness is achieved through layered lighting, dynamic ceiling grids, and a transparent terrace façade. The result is a seductive chaos of light, sound, and memory—a contemporary reinterpretation of Japanese subculture, where nostalgia and modernity coexist in dazzling equilibrium.
