Reef House is a private residence in Coral Gables shaped by the calm rhythm of South Florida living. Inspired by the neighborhood’s tropical greenery and quiet residential streets, the house reflects a refined yet relaxed lifestyle. The architecture balances a restrained exterior presence with an open and fluid interior environment.
The concept draws from the modernist heritage of South Florida, translated through contemporary materials and precise proportions. Deep overhangs, strong horizontal lines, and a close relationship with landscape reference mid-century architectural principles while adapting them to contemporary living. Equally important was the idea of contrast: from the street the house appears composed and private, while once inside the spatial experience opens dramatically through courtyards and expansive glazing. The architecture turns inward, organizing daily life around protected outdoor spaces that provide light, greenery, and privacy.
Natural materials define the character of the interiors. Travertine, textured plaster, and warm wood surfaces create a calm architectural palette, emphasizing tactility and material depth. A sculptural travertine fireplace anchors the double-height living space, introducing a strong geometric gesture within the otherwise soft and relaxed atmosphere.
The kitchen and dining areas continue the open spatial flow of the house. Oriented toward an inner courtyard, the dining zone receives filtered daylight and framed greenery. A blue accent inspired by the nearby canal introduces freshness into the warm neutral palette, while stone surfaces and carefully integrated details reinforce the project’s refined material language.
