Located within the Suffolk Coast and Heaths Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, the Sizewell region presents a layered landscape shaped by the coexistence of industrial infrastructure and ecological conservation. The site is defined by the proximity of the Sizewell Nuclear Power Stations, the medieval Leiston Abbey, and the ecological reserve of RSPB Minsmere.
This project proposes to connect these two disparate landscape worlds, revealing changes in the dimension of time, activating triggers of memory, and conveying stories across space and time.
A botanical planting strategy, combined with wildlife-driven seed dispersal, reintroduces native species to establish ecological continuity between the sites. These interventions restore fragmented habitats while gradually reactivating lost ecological systems. Adapted to local environmental conditions, the planting framework is designed to evolve into a resilient and largely self-sustaining landscape.
Water is reintroduced as a subtle connective system, reinforcing ecological processes and enhancing landscape continuity. Productive planting, including native edible species, supports seasonal harvesting and small-scale cultural practices such as tea-making.
Elevated observation towers and platforms are positioned to frame simultaneous views towards Sizewell and Leiston Abbey, intensifying the perception of layered histories and enabling a spatial reading of time across the landscape.
The project ultimately envisions a living “memory-scape”, where ecological regeneration, cultural narratives, and spatial experience converge, allowing the landscape to gradually reveal its forgotten histories.
