Located in the Dogshead region of Austin, Texas, Strata is conceived as a memorial to the land itself, an architectural and landscape response to a site that has undergone significant ecological transformation over time. Once a thriving terrain of fertile soils, flowing water systems, and diverse vegetation, the Dogshead landscape has gradually been altered by human intervention, land misuse, and environmental shifts. Rather than treating the site as a problem to fix, this proposal frames it as a living narrative, one that remembers its past while actively shaping a regenerative future.
The project’s central idea is the Memorial of the Land, where soil, water, and vegetation become the primary mediums of remembrance. Instead of commemorating through static monuments, the landscape itself tells the story of loss, resilience, and renewal. Architecture becomes a subtle guide that reveals the layers of the earth while encouraging ecological restoration.
The experience unfolds through three spatial interventions. The first, The Soil Walk, consists of rammed earth walls constructed from soil sourced directly from the site. Visitors move through these compressed layers of earth, encountering the geological memory of the land. The material itself becomes a narrative device, connecting architecture to the ground from which it emerges.
The second intervention, Honoring the Loss, is a contemplative memorial garden defined by monolithic structures, gravel fields, and slightly sunken landscapes. This quiet space acknowledges the ecological degradation the region has experienced while offering visitors a place for reflection.
The final component, Planting for the Future, transforms the broader site into a living laboratory for regenerative land practices. Through strategies such as silvopasturing, intercropping, pollinator corridors, and keyline water harvesting, the landscape begins to heal itself. These interventions restore soil health, improve water retention, and rebuild ecological diversity while educating visitors about sustainable land stewardship.
Strata proposes that the most meaningful memorial is not a static object but a living system. By transforming the Dogshead landscape into a regenerative environment of learning, participation, and reflection, the project demonstrates that remembering the land is inseparable from caring for its future.
