The renovation and expansion of a residence at the base of Mount Tamalpais was guided by a master plan that embraced both the California landscape and the Italianate hilltown character of the existing architecture. The program introduced exterior sculpture gardens, diverse landscape experiences, and amenities, including a pool, tennis court, pool house, guest building, extensive additions to the main residence, and a rose garden.
At the center of the design stands a three-story Tempietto stair tower, conceived as both a hinge and a knuckle that organizes circulation and connects all spaces upon entry. The tower also serves as an homage structure, housing Fornasetti’s masterpiece, the Metaphysical Room, whose circular top and abstract perspectives recall Piranesi and Escher. As the stairs descend through three levels, architecture and art intertwine—each informing the other.
The interiors are shaped by a significant art and craft collection, with works by Igshaan Adams, Sam Gilliam, Piero Fornasetti, Roni Horn, Giuseppe Penone, Claude Lalanne, David Hockney, Ruth Asawa, Ellsworth Kelly, and Teresita Fernández. Extending this dialogue into the landscape, the gardens feature installations by Larry Bell, Yinka Shonibare, Simone Leigh, Anthony Gormley, Tony Cragg, and Zizipho Poswa, merging art, architecture, and nature into a cohesive whole.
