Inspired by the owner’s taste and spatial needs, this design emerged from a reimagining of an initial concept, which the owner found lacking in functionality. Through in-depth conversations with the designers, they concluded that life should effortlessly hold one’s collection of life’s “clips.” Thus, this project not only fulfills the owner’s vision for an industrial style and a sense of openness but also emphasizes natural light and a vertical axis within limited space, creating an ideal home that is both practical and visually pleasing.
In a limited space, maximizing area usage is crucial, posing a key design challenge for this project. The designers skillfully applied various techniques to optimize functionality.
Starting with the horizontal axis, the original layout featured a significant step-up right at the entrance. To address safety and flow, the designers widened the entry platform to create a turning area. Beneath this platform is a storage unit for appliances. Next, a linear kitchen cabinet extends toward the balcony entrance, with a protruding wall featuring track tiles and industrial-style lighting, playfully evoking a “castle” built at home. The top of this “castle” serves as a bedside table in the bedroom.
For vertical axes, a staircase with solid wood steps and a steel frame creates a visually light effect with its open structure. The refrigerator is placed beneath the stairs. The position of beams determines the bed orientation, allowing the bedroom to incorporate a small desk platform, a bedside table, and storage space, enhancing both function and comfort in the limited area.
