Woven Commons transforms an underutilized industrial warehouse in Red Hook, Brooklyn into a community-centered cultural hub where food becomes a medium for social connection, learning, and collective identity.

Located at the intersection of a neighborhood community garden, NYCHA housing, and a nearby high school, the project establishes a civic platform that brings together diverse groups through shared activities. Anchored by a communal kitchen and dining hall, the space supports cooking workshops, public events, and everyday gatherings, creating opportunities for exchange between residents, students, and local producers. By framing food as both a cultural and social infrastructure, the project redefines the role of a community hall as an active, lived environment.

The design preserves the existing brick and steel structure, maintaining the building’s industrial character while introducing a lightweight bamboo system that activates the interior. Bamboo arches and woven elements create a porous spatial framework that organizes the program while maintaining openness and flexibility. These structures soften the rigid geometry of the warehouse and introduce warmth, texture, and a sense of movement.

Integrated skylights bring natural light deep into the space, enhancing the experience of gathering and reinforcing a connection between interior activity and the surrounding environment. Through adaptive reuse and material innovation, Woven Commons transforms a forgotten structure into a vibrant cultural anchor—an inclusive space where community life is continuously shaped through food, craft, and shared experience.
