South Bucks Country Park transforms a former 20-hectare golf course and driving range into an inclusive, biodiversity-rich community parkland and visitor hub. Designed to repurpose engineered land, the landscape-led scheme establishes a harmonious balance between ecological enhancement, social wellbeing, and physical activity.
At the heart of the park is a newly designed welcome area featuring a visitor center with a sheltered café terrace, outdoor seating surrounded by gabion walls, timber decking, and planting beds that establish an immediate connection with nature. Beyond the welcome hub, the masterplan integrates a diverse range of recreational amenities and natural habitats connected by accessible footpaths, cycleways, and mown grassland trails.
A central feature of the masterplan is a phenological site planting strategy anchored by an elevated outdoor amphitheater. Serving as the highest point on site, the amphitheater forms the focal point for twelve visual and spatial axes corresponding to the months of the year. Tree species planted along each axis are curated to bloom or exhibit peak seasonal color during their designated month.
Crucially, this radial topography doubles as a passive Sustainable Drainage System (SuDS). The land slopes naturally downward from the central amphitheater toward the site boundaries, directing surface water runoff into retained and proposed SuDS networks, existing ditches, and ponds to manage stormwater naturally.
A key highlight of the scheme is the natural playground, which blends seamlessly into the surrounding landforms. The play area features organic timber structures, balance beams, climbing mounds, and interactive play zones set within soft wet-pour surfaces that incorporate subtle texture and playful concentric patterns. Complementing the active play zones are wildflower meadows, acid grassland infill zones, and mature woodland edges that maximize habitat creation and biodiversity net gain.
By integrating creative topography, seasonal planting, and climate-resilient infrastructure, South Bucks Country Park offers a benchmark landscape design model that fosters community cohesion while restoring local ecosystem health.
